Matariki Creative Community Day 2011: Sunday 3rd July, 9.30am

Tena Koe. Welcome to our Matariki Maori New Year Celebrations!

“Matariki. Ko ngaa whatu tuariki. Ko koia te ara tuu o te aatea. Ka puumau te toamairangi aa kura.” [Te Awhimate Tawhai & Honor Ross]

Last year parents of the school initiated the Matariki Creative Community Day event to celebrate Matariki, the Maori New Year, as well as act as a fundraiser for the newly established Upper School.

The day really touched a chord with participants and was loved by both young and old - a truly magical day of creativity, learning, food and performance inspired by the star cluster Matariki which appears in the pre-dawn sky in early June and heralds the Maori New Year.

Buoyed by the enthusiastic response, Titirangi Rudolf Steiner School is hosting the Matariki Creative Community Day again this year on Sunday 3rd July.

In keeping with the tradition begun last year, the main focus will be the offering of a wide variety of workshops that creatively express what Matariki reminds us of – the deeply nurturing soul connection between the Starry Heavens, Man and the Earth.

There are workshops suitable for adults and children. They run in two series, morning and afternoon and are 1 ½ hours long. See workshop details below.

A crèche will also be available, so the whole family can participate.

Workshops cost $5 for children 10 years and under; $10 for students 11+ years; and $15 for adults.

The official welcome begins at 10am with a presentation of Deidre Nehua’s poem “Matariki - The Navigator” by the school’s Class 10 (Year 11) students.

After the first workshop series family and friends can come together again at the Café which will be serving hot hangi, nourishing food, drinks, and home baking.

Also over the lunch period the Art Auction will take place - this year with a celebrity auctioneer -and features a broad range of beautiful Matariki inspired art and craft work by talented local artists.

The day ends with a special treat – a complimentary Matariki play performed by some well known and local actors - something for the whole family to enjoy.

Final registration is from 9.30-10am on the day, however, pre-registration for the Workshops and Crèche is strongly recommended as popular workshops were fully booked before final registration last year.

Creche costs $5 per child per session. Creche sessions run the same times as the workshops 10.30am-midday; and 1.30-3pm. They are held by a Kindergartener and helpers.

All proceeds support the Titirangi Rudolf Steiner Upper School.

Felted Winter Wall Hanging with Liudmila Padukova - Adults

Working with felt is one of the oldest handcrafts. Hats and mittens, coats and boots, rugs and wall hangings were made from sheep wool worldwide. I discovered felting about three years ago and for me the sheep wool is one of the most attractive material for handwork.

In our workshop we will make a small felted and decorated wall hanging using the traditional method of soap and hot water. I welcome the opportunity to share my skills with everybody who wishes to touch this wonderful craft of feltmaking.

There is no charge for materials for this workshop. Instead all felted work created will be gifted to the Art Auction for fundraising and that everyone may see what beautiful creations that can be achieved with this craft - even for beginners.
