The café serving hot, nourishing food, drink and homebaking over the lunch period was kept very busy. The food, delicious. Unfortunately we had to cancel the Hangi due to the weather conditions.

Art

There were beautiful craft stalls and a Silent Art Auction featuring Matariki themed arts and crafts from local artists. View some of the artworks here.

Our Matariki Silent Art Auction was premiered at the Titirangi Village Market on Sunday, May 30th 2010 and on display at school in the lead up to the day where it was on display in the school hall until bidding closed after lunch.

Our thanks to Audie Beazley, Tracey Murphy, Tracey Tawhiao, Leah Wilson, Yannis Petzold, Sandra and Thelma Tyler, Matafetu Smith, Chinmay Patel, Helmi Thompson, Louise Taylor and Daniela Ehrig for their generous contributions.

Check out this beautiful, inspired work from these talented local artists!

Koauau Flute Making with Audie Beazley

Flute Making

Learn how to make a traditional Maori Flute. Enjoy adding surface patterns and then learn how to play it!
We will be providing bamboo for you to work with, however you are welcome to bring your own special piece of wood or bone. Dimensions should be around 150mm long and have a 16-18mm hole through it.

Harakeke Flax Weaving with Olivia James

‘Tena Koutou. In this workshop I will be sharing how to make a very simple kai kono / food basket, which was taught to me one summer at Te Muri, and, time permitting, there will also be an opportunity to make Matariki stars. It's always nice to sing while working, so you may learn a waiata or two as well!

As the new Class One Teacher here at Titirangi Rudolf Steiner School, I am delighted to be asked to bring a workshop to the wider community. I have always had a passion for working with Harakeke / NZ Flax. While completing my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Maori Studies at the University of Auckland, I was a part of several Maori knowledge recovery papers ('Te Kete Aronui' and ‘Te Whare Pora'), under the guidance of amazing tutors. Kia ora’. Olivia James.

Te Reo Maori me o ngaa Tikanga with Helen Peke

This workshop will focus on introducing the Maori language through interactive learning and by applying tikanga /traditional protocols as a means for grasping understanding.

Kia ora, Noo Pare Hauraki, noo Pare Waikato ahau. Ko Helen Peke taku ingoa. Nei raa te mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa.
Greetings my name is Helen Peke and I hail from Hauraki and Waikato area. I have been learning Te Reo Maaori for over 15 years and facilitating learning for about 10 years. I currently deliver Te reo Maaori Beginners Level with Unitec.

Due to injury Helen is no longer able to offer this workshop. For an indigenous perspective on our relationship to the stars, book into our afternoon Matariki Lore Workshop. It is facilitated by Zena Nicholls who is also an experienced Te Reo tutor, currently working at Te Waananga O Aotearoa.

Marionette Making with Kay Parish

Make your own Matariki Marionette. A silk marionette, representing one of the seven sisters, makes a beautiful Matariki decoration or puppet show character.
A small amount of sewing is involved; children under 9 years will need adult assistance. Kits to take home and make will also be available to buy at $10.

Growing a Kitchen Garden the Permaculture Way with Richard Lee

Learn how to plant out and manage a small kitchen garden to maximise yield and minimise the pests.

Bring your gumboots and warm jackets as these workshops will both be practical outdoor demonstrations.

Wormfarming, Bokashi & Hot Composting with Richard Lee

Learn how to turn your kitchen scraps into valuable fertiliser for your garden. Gumboots/warm jackets recommended!

Richard is a sustainability expert with qualifications in organic farming. He currently coordinates the Sustainable Ranui Swanson program for Project Twin Streams and is Chairperson of Permaculture in New Zealand (PiNZ).

Storytelling as a practical and therapeutic tool for working with the modern young child with Kathy MacFarlane

Matariki and winter are perfect times for engaging in the age old art of Storytelling. This workshop will look at fairy tales, myths and legends, therapeutic and biographical stories in order for us to find imaginative keys to open the doors for our children. Story telling can create imaginative pictures which allow children alternative non-judgmental options for behaviour or ways of being in the world.

Kathy MacFarlane has worked with storytelling for over twenty years in her role as a kindergarten teacher at the Titirangi Rudolf Steiner School.

Circus Skills

Learn how to juggle, spin saucers, twirl circus poi, balloon art and maybe more.....
Class 9 students Calliope, Hiroto, Alex and Chinmay will teach some of the skills they have learnt over the past 3 years of their Circus Skills lessons at Titirangi Rudolf Steiner School. No prior experience necessary, but they can certainly teach non-beginners some more advanced skills too. For ages 10+.

Matariki Star Mobiles

Make a Matariki Star Mobile by folding three-dimensional paper stars. If you manage to make all seven stars you can then turn them into your own star constellation for hanging at home. Suitable for children aged 9+ years and adults. Simpler stars are offered for younger children (7-8 years) accompanied by an adult participant. This workshop will be run by Kindergarten parents.

Clay Modelling with Isabelle Krauskopf

Winter is the perfect time for contemplation - an opportunity to go deep within yourself and work with your inner life.
In this workshop we will experience these rhythms of the inner and the outer. With earth as our tool, we will discover how, by connecting within, we can open a space to connect with the outer world with renewed strength.

Isabelle is a german born artist. She has many years experience as a Graphic Artist in Germany, Egypt and NZ. She was fortunate to attend the Academia Di Santa Maria in Italy for further training in stone and marble sculpture. Her own schooling was through the Waldorf system and she continues to be involved in anthroposophical initiatives while raising three children.

Eurythmy with Kimberle Haswell

Eurythmy is an art form that makes visible the sounds of speech and music through movement.

In this workshop we will explore the social quality in moving geometric star forms. Together we will create a beautiful candle lit experience with poetry in motion. Suitable for adults and students 13 + years of age.

Kimberle has taught and performed Eurythmy for the last 12 years. She loves to see people of various ages and abilities gather together in sacred, social movement that unfolds the mystery of being human.
